It's My Island I, 2007
Diasec mounted C-type print, 115 x 115 cm
“It’s
my Island” consists of a series of photographs,
a video-triptych depicting Laitinen constructing his own island
(and therefore micro-nation) in the Baltic Sea; using nothing but a spade, sand
and sacks. Individually filling each of the 200 bags with sand, the three simultaneous
videos go on to show Laitinen painstakingly dragging each bag to the same spot
in the sea, braving the harsh waves and conditions, until the island starts to
appear over the water.
The completed island is then carefully documented in a series of large-scale
photographs which become noble representations of the beautiful and romantic
landscape which is so present in his work.
(This project took place throughout the entire summer and in the autumn,
large storms destroyed the island leaving nothing behind…)
